SPACE DYE

Space dye is this season’s answer to tie-dye – an exciting dyeing effect that has taken the streets by storm. You may have noticed an influx of consumers wearing garments in what appears to be a multi-coloured striped effect – this is space dye.

The space dyeing technique gives yarn a unique, multi-coloured effect. While a typical skein of yarn is the same colour throughout, a skein of space-dyed yarn comprises two or more different colours which typically repeat themselves throughout the length of the yarn.

Space-dyed yarn can be produced in either co-ordinating or contrasting shades. Co-ordinated colours, such as various neutral tones or assorted shades of blue, provide a subtle yet sophisticated look, while contrasting hues, such as purple, red or blue, offer a funkier feel.

WHAT IS SPACE DYEING?

There are various methods of space dyeing:

Space dyeing in package form

Colour is injected at a fixed place at high pressure and collected through a vacuum, creating patterns and dye patches on the package. After treatment and washing, the result is a yarn with beautifully dyed patches and good sharpness. It’s a quick process compared to other techniques such as skein printing.

Space dyeing in skein form

Space dyeing in skein form is a simple process, similar to tie-dyeing. Colour is applied directly to the material by brushing or spraying in fixed places to achieve a multi-coloured effect. The yarns are then dried for colour fixation and washed, with the colour set to the hank with mordants. Although it’s a straightforward process, with the benefit of colour control, it can be cumbersome and time-consuming.

The warp system

In this process, multiple strands of yarn are continuously printed at spaced intervals with different colours. The yarns usually have long spaces for each colour. Typical colour lengths are 3"–7".

The knit-de-knit process

For a variable or non-uniform appearance, knit-de-knit can be utilised. Firstly, yarn is knitted in a tubular fabric – like a sock – and then printed using engraved rollers. As the printed colour does not readily penetrate the areas of the yarn where it crosses itself, alternately dyed and undyed spaces appear. In contrast, you could use pre-dyed knitted material to overprint with different colours.

Continuous dye process

In this process, multiple strands of yarn are continuously printed at spaced intervals with different colours and are applied by air jet or dye troughs. This allows for threads to have either long or short spaces of colour.
